Santità,

poche ore fa ho assistito al funerale di Pavarotti. Tutto ben fatto e meritato.

Ho ascoltato le Sue parole, Santità, forse un po' formali e distaccate, ma, in fondo, adeguate alla circostanza.

Lo stato e la Chiesa hanno onorato un uomo importante. Necessario.

Però, Santità, guardi un po' che strani pensieri mi vengono!

Pavarotti era divorziato, un peccatore. La Chiesa l'ha accolto ed è stato un atto altamente cristiano.

Ricorda, tuttavia, un certo Piergiorgio Welby, a cui la Chiesa ha mostrato un'anima angusta e una più angusta porta che non si è aperta per un "Pater" ?

Penso che il Signore non l'abbia capito. Lui ha dimore per tutti.

Però a qualcuno chiederà conto. Preghi per farsi perdonare.

E Lei perdoni me. Cordialmente ed indegnamente

Your Holiness,

A few hours ago I witnessed Pavarotti’s funeral.  All very well done and deserved.  I listened to your words, Your Holiness, which were perhaps somewhat formal and detached.  But, in the end, appropriate for the occasion. 

The State and the Church honoured an important man.  It was necessary. 

However, Holy Father, a few strange thoughts occurred to me ! 

Pavarotti was divorced;  he was a sinner.  The Church welcomed him – a highly Christian act. 

Do you remember, on the other hand, a certain Piergiorgio Welby, to whom the Church displayed a mean spirit and even meaner door which was not opened for a “Pater”?

I believe that the Lord has not understood this. He has a place for everyone.

However, someone will want an explanation.  Pray so that you will be forgiven.

And you will pardon me.  Cordially and unworthily yours.
